How to Run in Hot Weather

If you are an avid runner and you can’t imagine not running all summer because of the heat and burning sun, you will have to adjust your usual routine to accommodate the change in conditions to be able to running without risking your health.

Here are some steps you can take to adjust to running in hot weather. First of all give yourself time to adjust to the new conditions.  For the first couple of weeks choose routes that area little shorter than what your  used to. Let your body get used to the higher temperatures for the first few miles, running slower than your normal pace.

Run early in the morning as it is the coolest time of the day. Get up a little earlier in the morning to accommodate your new running schedule. Also on hot sunny days try running in the shade as much as possible. If your running in a town or city, run on the sidewalk that is in the shade and if your town has a lake, go run around the lake because it is usually a little cooler there.

An important part of hot weather running is make sure you stay hydrated. This can  not be stressed enough because if you don’t stay drink water, you could get dehydration which is life threatening. So make sure you drink while you’re running and don’t wait till you get thirsty because then your body is starting to dehydrate.

Don’t forget to put sunscreen on before you leave the house to avoid getting sunburn. It’s a good idea all over your body and not just the parts that are exposed. Why? Well for one thing you might take off your shirt when you get hot or your clothes move when you are running and might expose some parts of your body that did not have sunscreen applied.
